Mambo Yemaya

Mambo Yemaya

Yemaya is a priestess classically trained in the ancient art of Haitian Hoodoo, which has been passed down from generation to generation. Born on one of the many Caribbean islands chained together, she knew nothing but poverty, but in the same breath, an immense pride in her local village and community. They pulled together during tough times to make sure every man, women, and child was cared for. Her family was renowned all over their island for their ability to communicate with spirits and see what was beyond the veil. Although Yemaya’s mother performed the duties of the town priestess, it was Yemaya’s grandmother who saw something in her, something that was beyond the power normally found in their bloodline. With a deep affinity for the spiritual world and through guidance by her grandmother, Yemaya had become a master of the dark arts and soothsayer to the other side by her late teens. This brought her to the attention of people who sought her advice and guidance, near and far.

As Yemaya grew both in age and power, she became restless. Always grateful for her family and village, she could feel the pull of the world, whispering to her that her destiny had to be found elsewhere, but those great things meant leaving her world behind and taking brave first steps into the unknown. She left the village to see the world, using her innate powers and mystical connections for the greater good. Young but wise beyond her years, Yemaya could tap into the spiritual realm and unlock hidden secrets long since forgotten by mere mortals, secrets that dare to pull at the very fabric of our known reality. Through these encounters, she met many strange and mysterious beings who offered Yemaya access to powerful artifacts and knowledge, but at a cost, one that only those closest to her will ever know. Along with these secrets came the divination to see the future, a skill that she uses to challenge the status quo and stand up for those who cannot speak for themselves.

Finally settling down after decades of travel, Yemaya took a hard look at her life and decided that now was the time to put her plans into action. She aspired to pass the torch of her sacred knowledge to a new generation. Purchasing a plantation in the deep south, Yemaya started a foster home for troubled girls who were known for their anti-authoritarian ways and powerful will. These were the girls who get lost in the system, the girls much like Yemaya, feeling that inside there was a power and a gift just waiting to come out. Through this, her coven was born, a fresh wave of magic practitioners, trained in the mystical arts and ready to fight for the forces of good wherever possible. Although not without its challenges, because let’s be honest, even one rebellious teenager is enough, let alone keeping up with 15, Yemaya takes her new life in stride. She is always on the lookout for where she can make a difference in a world filled with so much sadness and passive indifference.

Formative – Key Memories 🧠

At night, Yemaya has a tendency to visit graveyards, searching for long-forgotten secrets whispered by the dead. She walks the grounds, taking in the energy of those long lost, until one fateful night, a powerful entity tried taking her over for its own nefarious purposes. Luckily, being able to fight it off, Yemaya is now far more cautious when wandering through the rows of the dead, for you never know what evil may lie in wait.

As a young girl, when her training was getting underway, a familiar looking to tie itself to her as both protector, confidant, and eyes in the skies of the world of humans, visited Yemaya. In the form of an owl, it does her bidding as required, seeking knowledge and secrets from all corners of both this world and the one that sits on top of it. Charmingly named Aradia, Yemaya trusts her familiar through the bonds they created with mystical arts, binding them in this world and the next. Aradia is never far from Yemaya’s side, perched next to her master, whispering discovered secrets into her ear.

Yemaya will never forget her own spiritual awakening. It came during a ritual, one that had been passed down from Mambo to Mambo throughout the generations. Although terrified, she opened herself up to the vale that lies beyond this life, unlocking doors in her mind that would otherwise would have been left unopened, while igniting a fire in her soul that drives her to this day. It was during this time that the spirits spoke to her of her fate and the fate of those around her, a burden that she carries with her always. She learned that the power to change what we have already foretold is futile, and that the fates will have their way. The strands of time are infinite for no one.

While exploring the grounds of her newly purchased plantation, Yemaya came across an unmarked grave that called to her. Not one to be unwilling to do the work, she picked up a shovel and started digging until she hit something solid. Brushing away the soil, she found a bag tied with chains. Curious, she brought it back to her house to examine further. Upon opening, she found the macabre contents of what seemed to be skeletal remains, mostly destroyed, except for a skull in remarkably good shape, considering the rest of the contents. She also found some clothes and other items that likely belonged to the remains. One other oddity was a piece of paper rolled up and tucked inside the skull. Removing it, Yemaya translated the mystical language written on it, reading the spell aloud, and to her surprise, the skull spoke back. On guard but curious, Yemaya introduced herself and probed for answers to the riddle. She learned its name was Lucious Wellman, a soldier from the civil war, now bound to this earth for eternity… but that, my friends, is a different story for another time.
